A Patient Man Has Great Understanding – Daily Inspiration, August 8, 2012

“A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.” Proverbs 14:29

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven” (NIV). Just as there is a time for anger like in cases of injustice, there is also a time for us to be still and patient, like in instances when we feel insulted. Before reacting to an offense, take a deep breath and consider the consequences of your actions. What benefit will be gained? How will it affect others? How will it affect me? The momentary satisfaction of giving in to the temptation to react to every offense may not be worth the permanent pain it will cause. Words and actions cannot be taken back. People may forgive them, but they are never forgotten. When you find yourself in a situation where you really want to react to a personal slight, pray to God for the self-control to restrain those urges and replace them with positive, effective thoughts rather than actions that divide and destroy.

May the Lord be with you today.
