“The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this and it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:22-24
Psalm 118:24 is part of today’s suggested reading from Our Daily Bread. It is a very popular verse and is repeated often. However, the preceding verses are provided so that the complete thought is presented. So many times, oft-repeated verses become part of our vocabulary. We can recite them at will, but we cannot have a true understanding of them unless we read and study the context in which they were written.
Jesus, Himself, referred to Psalm 118:22-23 (Matthew 21:42; Mark 12-10-11; Luke 20:17) as he told the parable of the evil farmers to the religious leaders. Jesus is the rejected stone that became the capstone. The capstone is the center stone in the top of an arch, holding the whole arch together. The One who was rejected by His people is now the Center of the church. Yes, the lord has done this and it is marvelous in our eyes. So let’s acknowledge this day, the day the Lord has made. We should rejoice and be glad in it!
This, of course, can applied to our daily living as well. There are days when the last thing we feel like doing is rejoicing. Go before God and tell Him (although nothing is hidden from Him). By the end of your “talk” with Him you may find the will to praise in light of your circumstances. And that will is God. He has given us this day to live and serve Him. For that, we can be always be glad.
May the Lord bless you today and always.
