Publish Your eBook with Amazon KDP

I just published my first eBook , Traveling The Narrow Path, a collection of my inspirational reflections and devotionals, via Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing or KDP. The process was simple and, most importantly, free. There is no hassle of enrollment as you can sign in using your existing Amazon sign on. If you don’t have an Amazon sign on, then you can sign up for an Amazon account to gain access to Amazon KDP.

The publishing process is straightforward. Once signed in, Click “Add a New Title” from the Bookshelf page and you are brought to the Your Book tab. This tab contains the Book Basics page where – as the page name implies – you enter the basic information about your content, such as the title, edition number and description. You also enter the publishing details like the language (English and 10 other languages to choose from), publishing rights and browse and search tags so Amazon shoppers can locate your work. You also upload your book cover image and, of course, your book. Amazon KDP supports content saved in Word (.doc), Adobe PDF (.pdf), ePub (.epub), Plain Text (.txt) and MobiPocket (.mobi and .prc). For best results, Amazon KDP recommends uploading content in HTML. Click “Save and Continue” and you are directed to Rights & Pricing tab where you can set the pricing for your ebook (the minimum is $2.99) and your royalty amounts. Amazon offers 70%and 35% royalty options.

If all this is a bit overwhelming, the Amazon KDP Community page as numerous resources ranging from FAQs to video tutorials to aid you in converting, formatting and publishing your content.

When all fields are completed and your book is submitted, it goes into “In Review” then “Publishing” statuses. Allow up to 24 -48 hours for the eBook to be available for purchasing. The status changes to “Live” when the review and publishing is complete.

While I don’t think my freshman endeavor will catapult me to the ranks of this author, I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome and will seriously consider publishing additional content in the future. If you have something to say and want a free platform from which to say it, then give Amazon KDP a shot. Who knows, you may have a bestseller on your hands!
